Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe is standing by his jokes about Puerto Rico after getting backlash from people on both sides of the political spectrum. He made these jokes at former President Trump’s rally in New York City.
Hinchcliffe, also known as “Kill Tony,” replied to a video on X that showed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticizing his jokes, which he told on stage at Madison Square Garden before Trump’s speech.
“These people have no sense of humor,” Hinchcliffe posted. “It’s crazy that a vice presidential candidate would waste time taking a joke out of context to make it sound racist.”
He added, “I love Puerto Rico and even go there on vacation. I make fun of everyone…watch the full set. Tim, maybe it’s time to lighten up.”
Hinchcliffe also made jokes about Jewish people, Black men, and suggested Black Americans carve watermelons instead of pumpkins for Halloween. But his jokes about Puerto Rico got the most attention.
In one part of his set, he joked, “There’s a floating island of garbage in the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” which got mixed reactions from the crowd.
He also joked that Latinos “love making babies” and “don’t pull out,” adding, “They came inside, just like they did to our country.”
Walz and Ocasio-Cortez responded right after, with Ocasio-Cortez saying, “When someone calls Puerto Rico ‘floating garbage,’ that’s what they think about you and anyone with less money.” She later encouraged Puerto Ricans across the country to watch the clip, saying it was “super upsetting” to her.
After Hinchcliffe responded to her comments online, she criticized him again.
