Pixar’s first-ever long-form series, Win or Lose, was initially set to include a transgender storyline, but Disney decided to cut the content.
Set to debut in 2025, Win or Lose follows a co-ed middle school softball team as they prepare for their championship game. Each episode centers on a different character, highlighting diverse perspectives, including “the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, and even a lovesick umpire,” according to the official synopsis. However, a transgender perspective, which was originally part of the show, has been removed.
A source told Variety that references to one character’s gender identity were cut, impacting a few lines of dialogue in later episodes. While the storyline did not span an entire episode, it would have briefly touched on the topic. The role was voiced by 18-year-old transgender actress Chanel Stewart.
“When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents prefer to address certain topics with their children on their own terms and timeline,” a Disney spokesperson said.
The series is written, directed, and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, with David Lally serving as producer. Will Forte voices the team’s coach. Win or Lose is scheduled to premiere on February 11.
