June 27, 2025The End is Nigh: AI Threatens the Future of YouTube Creators
The landscape of online video consumption, particularly on platforms like YouTube, is undergoing a radical transformation, one that we believe signals the beginning of the end for traditional video-on-demand (VOD) creators like us. We’ve observed a significant increase in AI-generated “slop” videos being served, often indistinguishable to many viewers, leading to wasted time and a degraded user experience. This alarming trend is now compounded by new features rolled out by YouTube’s parent company, Google, which we contend directly threaten the livelihood and intellectual property of content creators.
Google’s AI Training: A Betrayal of Trust One of the most infuriating developments is the revelation that Google is using our YouTube videos to train its V3 AI model, and creators cannot opt out. CNBC reported that Google launched its V3 generative AI model in May, and its realistic output is attributed to its training on YouTube video content. This practice extends beyond V3, as our uploads are also being used to advance Google’s ChatGPT competitor, Gemini. While Google stated they “always used YouTube content to make our products better” and recognize “the need for guard rails” for creators’ images and likeness, we find this commitment lacking given the inability to opt out. In fact, despite a December update allowing creators to choose whether third-party models scrape their videos, Google’s own Gemini remains notably absent from this opt-out list, simply because it’s a first-party model. We certainly did not agree to our content being used in this manner when we uploaded it.
YouTube Premium’s New AI Search: A Direct Attack on Creator Revenue The threat deepens with Google’s expansion of its controversial AI overview tools to YouTube Premium. This new experimental feature, rolling out on iOS and Android for U.S. Premium members, introduces AI-powered search results carousels for topics like shopping, travel, or local activities. Instead of directing users to creators’ videos, these carousels offer short videos with AI-generated summaries, presented like Instagram stories.
We believe the endgame is clear: Google plans to use AI to “steal YouTube views from YouTubers”. By scraping existing videos, creating their own AI-generated content or summaries, and running ads on them, Google could potentially bypass creators entirely, retaining 100% of ad revenue instead of sharing a portion with us. This move could decimate channels, particularly those focused on “how-to” content or informational topics, by redirecting traffic away from their original videos. While YouTube claims this feature enhances discovery and provides “useful insights,” creators are concerned it will misrepresent content or divert traffic, especially if AI summaries miss key context. This scenario paints a bleak picture, solidifying the grim reality of the “dead internet theory” where human-created content is overshadowed by AI.
Creators Push Back: MrBeast’s Example The concerns over AI’s encroachment are not ours alone. Even top creators are facing challenges. For instance, MrBeast, a prominent YouTuber, launched an AI thumbnail tool to assist small creators but faced such severe backlash that he was forced to retract it. He acknowledged “missing the mark” and listened to community feedback, removing the tool and instead promoting a section on his website to “hire thumbnail artist,” turning a negative situation into one that supports human artists. This demonstrates that the creative community largely opposes AI’s direct replacement of human effort, even in auxiliary tasks.
Our Call to Action: Support Your Favorite Creators Directly In the face of these developments, we understand that traditional YouTube revenue streams are increasingly unstable. We strongly encourage viewers to support their favorite creators directly. For our part, we continue to push alternatives like our membership program at TheQuartering.com/join, which offers access to our members-only Discord, and our presence on platforms like Rumble. In these turbulent times, we stress the importance of self-reliance, both for personal well-being, like making smart supplement choices, and for creators to find independent revenue streams. This is a dark future for creators, but direct community support can help us navigate it.
