CD Projekt Red has been the target of a cyber attack. Hackers have threatened to release information including source code for an unreleased version of The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt Red hasn’t exactly been painted in the best light since the release of Cyberpunk 2077. The bad news keeps coming for the Polish developer as it revealed via a statement this morning that it has been the victim of a cyber attack. The hackers have stolen source code from released and unreleased CDPR titles, as well as documents relating to accounting, admin, legal, and HR.
“We discovered that we have become a victim of a targeted cyber attack due to which some of our internal systems have been compromised,” CDPR revealed via its statement. The hackers left CDPR a ransom note, divulging what exactly they had taken and requesting CDPR get in touch with them within 48 hours.
he ransom note, which is included in the tweet above along with CDPR’s statement, claims the hackers have dumped source code from Cyberpunk 2077, Gwent, and also from an unreleased version of The Witcher 3. The note threatens that should CDPR not contact them within 48 hours, and presumably cave to whatever demands they have, the source code and any other information the hackers have managed to find will be released online.
It’s unclear whether CDPR has made contact with the “actor” at this point. “We will not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor,” the statement reads. Releasing the source code for these games would allow free reign to anyone who wants it when it comes to modifications, posing an enormous threat to the future of the titles if the hackers go through with their threats.
The slim silver lining to this situation is the data of Cyberpunk, Gwent, and The Witcher players does not appear to have been compromised, nor stolen as part of the hack. CDPR states that as far as it can tell at this point, “the compromised data did not contain any personal data of our players.” The developer is working with law enforcement and IT forensic specialists as it attempts to resolve the incident before further, and possibly irreparable damage is done. Not the news CDPR wanted to deal with after it was estimated that as many as two million people have requested Cyberpunk refunds.
