Karmelo Anthony Freed as Family Gets Rich; New Video of Confrontation Could Change Everything
Here’s a shocking development we, unfortunately, saw coming. As you’re watching this, Karmelo Anthony is now out of custody, and his family has raised close to half a million dollars. Meanwhile, Austin Metcalf is still gone, and his brother continues to live with the aftermath of that tragic day.
Adding another layer to this already disturbing case is the report of existing video footage of the confrontation that preceded the fatal incident. This new evidence, which Texas authorities have now collected, could potentially alter the narrative surrounding the events at the Texas high school track meet on April 2nd.
As we previously reported, Karmelo Anthony, a student from Centennial High School, was in the tent of Memorial High School when Austin Metcalf told him he was in the wrong place and needed to leave. According to the official police report, Anthony responded by saying, “Touch me and see what happens,” while reaching into his bag. Metcalf either touched or pushed Anthony, who then allegedly said, “Punch me and see what happens”. Following this, Metcalf grabbed Anthony, and Anthony then pulled a knife from his bag, stabbed Metcalf in the chest, and fled. Metcalf died at the scene.
Anthony allegedly confessed to the stabbing but immediately claimed self-defense. One witness stated that Metcalf touched Anthony, while another reported that he grabbed him. Regardless of the initial physical contact, many legal experts, including popular voices like The Law of Self-Defense on YouTube, have stated that grabbing someone to remove them from a tent does not justify the use of deadly force.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the legal proceedings have taken a surprising turn. Anthony, who was initially held on a $1 million bail, has now had his bond drastically reduced to just $250,000 by a Collin County judge. This means his family only needed to post $25,000 to secure his release, leaving them with a substantial amount of the nearly $500,000 raised through online donations. During a hearing, Anthony’s father testified that his son is an A student and captain of the football and track team and that the family couldn’t afford the initial bond amount. Prosecutors questioned the father about the significant funds raised online, suggesting they could afford the higher bail. However, the defense argued that the online donations were not specifically a bail fund.
This case has unfortunately garnered national attention, partly due to the racial difference between the two teenagers. We’ve observed concerning reactions online, with some individuals shockingly claiming that Austin Metcalf “got what he deserved”. This kind of rhetoric is dangerous and completely unacceptable. As we’ve emphasized before, resorting to violence, especially with a weapon, over a verbal dispute is never justified. It’s crucial that we don’t let tribalism or double standards cloud our judgment.
Adding another layer of concern is the revelation that Karmelo Anthony was reportedly involved in another assault at his school just two months prior to this incident, which was handled internally. This prior incident raises further questions about his behavior and decision-making.
As of today, Karmelo Anthony is out of prison, required to wear an ankle monitor and remain at his parents’ home without permission to leave. Meanwhile, a young man has lost his life, and his family is grieving. We will continue to follow this story closely, especially with the expected release of the video footage, which we hope will shed further light on the events that led to this tragedy.
