July 8, 2025The New Superman: Ditching American Values for “Politics” and “Kindness” – Our Take
Here at our channel, we’ve watched Hollywood continually disappoint, and the upcoming Superman film, unfortunately, appears to be no exception. We had little interest once Henry Cavill was out, though we mean no disrespect to the new actor. However, with the director of Guardians of the Galaxy at the helm, we braced ourselves for what we expected would be a cheesy film with too many jokes. While the first Guardians of the Galaxy was excellent, the quality has generally declined with subsequent films, much like the Jurassic Park franchise.
Superman has long been a powerful symbol of America, embodying truth, justice, and the American way. For years, Hollywood seemed to ignore this iconic character, in our view, because they didn’t want to feature a strong white male protagonist. Now, nearly 90 years into Superman’s history, they’ve found a way to fundamentally alter what many of us have come to know and love about the character.
Director James Gunn has publicly stated that the new Superman film is about an immigrant who came from another place, and about how we’ve lost the value of basic human kindness. He explicitly confirms that the movie is about politics. Gunn also says the film will tackle morality, exploring whether one should ever take a life, a core belief for Superman, or if there’s a balance, as Lois Lane believes. He’s even told “jerks” who might find the film offensive, simply because it’s about kindness, to “screw off”.
While Gunn claims the film is about an immigrant, we recall that Superman crashed on Earth as a baby and was adopted. He didn’t purposely cross a border. We question how this aligns with the modern “immigrant identity” narrative that is being pushed. For months, Gunn seemed to be walking a tightrope, trying to keep politics out of the reboot of this American icon. But a recent interview broke the dam, making it clear this Superman is focused on “current day America” and “values, ethics, and a country unsure of itself”.
This shift comes from a director with a controversial past. We can’t forget James Gunn’s past tweets, which included highly offensive and explicit remarks. Despite these revelations, major Hollywood actors from the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper, publicly expressed their full support for Gunn when he was briefly removed from projects.
Regarding the film’s potential success, James Gunn has dismissed concerns about it needing to make $700 million at the box office, calling such expectations “nonsense”. While some reports suggest a budget as high as $363 million, Gunn denies these claims, stating the actual number isn’t even close. A reported budget of $225 million would still require around $500 to $600 million just to break even. We see Gunn’s statements as a clear sign of denial, suggesting he knows the story he’s created won’t resonate with audiences.
We’ve decided we won’t be paying to see this movie in theaters, despite thinking the trailer initially looked pretty good. We can guarantee that this last-minute reveal of the film’s political leanings will stoke significant backlash. It certainly seems like the director has created a story that isn’t going to appeal to a broad audience.
