Shocking Revelations from Pete Buttigieg Podcast Appearance Expose Transactional Nature of “Baby Buying”
What’s going on everyone? Jeremy here from The Quartering. We’ve just released a video covering an absolutely insane appearance by Pete Buttigieg on a recent podcast. What was revealed during this discussion has ignited a firestorm, highlighting concerns we’ve long held about the process many wealthy individuals use to acquire children. The clip itself makes the transactional nature of this practice wildly evident.
During the podcast, Pete Buttigieg discussed the adoption process, making statements that many will find deeply troubling. He openly stated that there are literally different lists for adoption based on the racial identity of the child. Specifically, he noted that the list for those wanting a white child only is longer.
But the most shocking moment came when he appeared to catch himself, using the word “discount” or mentioning not having to pay a deposit when referencing the fees involved. He used the word “discount” in reference to again buying a baby. As we highlighted, this is exactly what we mean. He knew what he said; there was a discount, implying black babies were on sale. This discussion about fees, deposits, and discounts underscores the deeply transactional nature of this process.
This isn’t just about adoption fees. When people engage in what we call “baby buying,” they are paying a woman for her eggs, paying for her womb, and then paying for adoption fees and other related costs. To us, every word about that is transactional.
We’ve long held the view that while a husband and wife using surrogacy is generally fine, it is morally and ethically wrong when two men or two women pay a poor person to incubate a baby so they can “larp” as a husband and wife. This process gets very close to literal trafficking. We don’t think two men or two women should be buying babies. Figures like Pete Buttigieg, Shane Dawson, and David Rubin, in our opinion, are wealthy gay men using their status to purchase children, and they shouldn’t be doing that.
Beyond the transactional aspect, this process robs that child of any chance of having a mother and a father, and we believe a child needs both. While divorces and single motherhood happen, ideally, there is an initial intent for a traditional family unit.
Pete Buttigieg spoke about not knowing anything about the racial identity of the kids until they started to look mixed race, which they are. However, we find this hard to believe. He described the adoption as a “surprise adoption scenario,” where he received a phone call while traveling and the very next day he and his husband were in a rural Midwestern hospital holding one-day-old twins. We also find it hard to believe he didn’t know they were twins.
Anybody who claims race isn’t a factor in this country should experience the adoption process. There are simply more white babies and more white people adopting children. Some may think it’s easier to raise a child who looks like them, avoiding questions about differences.
Pete Buttigieg discussed thinking about his son’s experience in the world being different due to his racial identity. He talked about navigating this and the possibility of needing mentors, acknowledging that we do not live in a colorblind society. However, we contend that if we are going to discuss identity, his children, being raised by white men in a white home in a white neighborhood, will ultimately have a white identity. We believe he took their black racial identity from them. Furthermore, while white people may not constantly be reminded of their racial identity in the same way, they certainly encounter race-based issues like job listings encouraging minorities, diversity initiatives, and race-based quotas.
He also brought up the perceived difficulty of dealing with his daughter’s hair. Frankly, we find this a bizarre point. The idea that managing different hair types is some unique ability only a few possess is strange, especially with resources like YouTube available. Perhaps he gets a thrill from having a black baby, viewing it as a form of fetishization or an accessory to appear progressive. There’s a level of sinisterness if he’s actually excited by the fact he has a black baby. We even question why he would take a position over a black family who might have wanted to adopt black babies.
While Pete Buttigieg did adopt, distinguishing it from the surrogacy/IVF process where embryos are discarded, the underlying principle of wealthy individuals acquiring children in this manner remains concerning. It feels gross and transactional. Kids deserve a mother and a father, or at least a chance at that. We highly doubt two gay men outranked mothers and fathers who were on adoption lists.
